One of my first memories of music is sitting in the living room listening to my parents play records on the stereo. John Lee Hooker was there, as well as all manner of other delta and southern blues, mountain music, folk, bluegrass .. music by _real people_.

Later on after I moved to TX, I got to make Mom eternally jealous by catching JLH at J&J's Blues Bar, maybe in the 86? 87? time frame, sitting not 10' from the stage, in a crowd of about 20 people.

i was fortunate to see jlh in a dump called "my father's place" on long island the yr before i moved to texas...not just performing, but also leaning up against the bar, ordering a drink. i was too timid to get close enough to hear what he got, but i like to think it was one bourbon, one scotch, and one beer.
